About
VLC media player is the flagship product of VideoLAN, a French association loi 1901 based at 18 rue Charcot, 75013 Paris. It plays video and audio files, discs, and streams on desktop and mobile without hunting for extra codec packs.
The project began as a campus streaming client at École Centrale Paris and is still shipping: VLC 3.0.23 arrived in January 2026 with codec updates, Windows ARM64 support, and a large stability and security pass. That continued maintenance makes VLC a serious European replacement for the default US media players that used to ship with Windows and Apple software.
